The Textbook Debate

This is a blog most of the college readers can relate to a little bit more, than the rest, but most of everyone has heard of the nightmarish costs a single textbook can be. So anyway, I walk into our luxurious campus bookstore, shuffling through the crowded aisles separating the books by classes. I grab the books I need not looking at the prices at all, knowing that I have HOPE (or what’s left of it) and a little financial aid to cover it. Then I get to the checkout line and I see three five digits (change included) pop up for a book that’s half an inch thick, soft back! So I got to thinking, how serious is it that I buy this book, can I pass by with not having the book and just taking notes in class. Everyone contemplates that question knowing they’d like to see a little bit of cash too. So I came up with an idea while listening to a comedian, Roy Woods Jr. He was making jokes on book costs saying that, “I get history books having different prices, history changes….but math? Unless 1+1=3 I don’t think I need a new book every year telling me the same math!” Hilarious enough as it is he’s right! My idea is really “green” I guess. This is a world of technology and Georgia Southern’s campus is supposed to be one of the more sustainable in the country so what about making everyone buy tablets (iPad’s, Kindle’s, etc.) and then selling the book electronically. Everyone knows that the books hidden costs are because of the book publishing costs, and the pretty pictures and hard bound covers. Maybe a petition should be in order, or a request to the Student Government Association. I think we’d have a little more money in our pockets, which will essentially pioneer an even greener stance for our university. I don’t know, maybe it’s just me, but I know other people are thinking the same thing.

Why isn’t Everyone Green?

Day 7 of my “Go Green for a better Earth” cause and I walk inside of my college apartment only to find that it is smoldering hot. (No A/C on) I started to pace around my room looking for ways to get cool. Ice cold drink….that didn’t work. De-robing….keeping it PG of course, but that didn’t work either. So ultimately I decided to crank on the A/C in efforts to bring the apartment at least back to room temperature. Then I start to look around at the many reusable water bottles I have gotten in the past couple of weeks, and uh I don’t really feel like washing them. Then I look at the empty wall sockets that I have been plugging electronics in and out of before I leave my apartment in the morning. Which ultimately leads me to ask the question, why isn’t everyone “green?” I think that I’ve figured it out. As a country, as people, as consumers we don’t have the immediate need or want to put the work into showing some sort of sustainability. Everyone one of the thing that I’ve said has an easier approach to receiving the same result. Yes we all want to save money and save energy and think that we are keeping energy back into the Earth, but people are essentially lazy. I found myself really wanting to just buy the case of plastic water bottles, that would give me the same tap water and not have to wash dishes. The A/C , I could’ve kept it on, and come back to a chilly house, but I didn’t. I wanted to do these things because I believe that I (we) can save the planet if we just try a little harder to do it. We’ve only got one planet, so I’m down for the cause, are you?

Will and Jada Splitsville?

(Courtesy of legendsiconsrolemodels.com)

Oh Hollywood, how you try so much to chew up and spit out its lovely married inhabitants on a day to day basis. According to TMZ.com, several reports are saying that power couple Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith have filed for separation. Everyone knows of the iconic status of these two legendary thespians, not only for their work on-screen, but also for their marriage off screen. Every relationship that has had any measure of success in the past 13 years has compared themselves to Will and Jada. Everyone of them. First, it was the rumored swinging that the couple reportedly did to keep their marriage alive, then reports of Smith buying Pinkett-Smith in a marriage agreement through Scientology, and now this! This couple has been the measure of success for the binding constitution of marriage for years, and because every other marriage in Hollywood is the latest PR stunt, their marriage has to ruined in some way, shape, or form. Both Smith and Pinkett-Smith have released a statement that their marriage is still strong. Oh how ironic it is that this buzz happens just a month after Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez filed for divorce. Some reports are even saying that the two stars were nestled up during the tapings of their TNT show, Hawthorne. I know Hollywood, there’s something in your system that does not want marriages to work, but please let these two live.
